Using the voice in her head — and mysterious images that popped in her brain — Max is able to bring the flock to the Institute of Higher Learning. Along the way, the fight Erasers, escape from cops – and even getting free disguises courtesy of an unsuspecting makeover store! Max also is revisited by Jeb, who reminds her that she is meant to save the world — and then there’s the time that she KISSES Fang. Eek!
Oh, and the members of the flock are discovering they have new powers, such as Angel’s ability to breathe underwater, and Nudge’s power to touch objects and see the people who use them. Pretty cool.
After climbing down in the sewer — and past rats — to get to the Institute, Max and her family print out files they find about their origins, and they open the cages of other bird children they find locked up in a lab. Also, Angel gets a pretty amazing dog named Total. But as they escape the Institute, Ari appears again, and when he and Max fight, she accidentally kills him, her own brother.
That night, as the flock gathers by a fire to read over their files, Max discovers a new mystery: She is the only one without a file of her own.

After Max reluctantly leaves Dr. Martinez’s house, she reconnects with Nudge, Iggy, Fang and the Gasman, trying to stay ahead of the Erasers and save Angel. Along the way, they steal money from an ATM, “borrow” a van, and go to a fast food restaurant to stock up on junk food (anyone else think it’s weird that Max eats chicken? She is part bird after all!). But then Max, Nudge and Fang are captured by Erasers, and put in cages at the School.
There, Max is surprised to see Jeb working with the whitecoats — and even more surprised at what he tells her: she was created to save the world. But even though he begs her to trust him, she escapes, taking the rest of the flock — including Iggy and Gazzy, who’ve only recently arrived on campus — with her.
Max starts feeling really sick, but when Angel tells them all about the Institute, where there are complete files that explain more about the experiments that created them, they head to New York to find out more. But even in the city chaos, they are not safe.
You said the superpower you’d most like to have is “Ability to fly.” Now here’s a new poll to try:

Fourteen year old Max is 98 percent human and two percent bird — just like the other members of her flock, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman and Angel. Besides being able to fly, they have other amazing powers: Angel can read minds, for example, and they all have amazing vision (except for Iggy, who is blind).
After escaping a lab, known as the School — where they lived in cages and were subjected to cruel experiments, they are living pretty peacefully on their own. That is until Erasers — the School’s security force of men than can morph into wolves– arrive and kidnap little Angel, Max’s favorite.
Max and the flock make a daring to return to the School and rescue Angel, but they are soon separated. While the others continue with a daring plan, Max ends up shot by local boys — and rescued by a veterinarian named Dr. Martinez, who cares for her like a loving and protective mother. The whitecoats are already experimenting on Angel, whom they call “It” — when Jeb, the man who had rescued them when they had escaped the lab the first time — appears to be working at the School again.
You said the word to best describe Max is “Brave.” Now here’s a new poll to try:

Book Summary: In James Patterson’s blockbuster series, fourteen-year-old Maximum Ride, better known as Max, knows what it’s like to soar above the world. She and all the members of the “flock”–Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman and Angel–are just like ordinary kids–only they have wings and can fly. It may seem like a dream come true to some, but their lives can morph into a living nightmare at any time…like when Angel, the youngest member of the flock, is kidnapped and taken back to the “School” where she and the others were experimented on by a crew of wack jobs. Her friends brave a journey to blazing hot Death Valley, CA, to save Angel, but soon enough, they find themselves in yet another nightmare–this one involving fighting off the half-human, half-wolf “Erasers” in New York City. Whether in the treetops of Central Park or in the bowels of the Manhattan subway system, Max and her adopted family take the ride of their lives. Along the way Max discovers from her old friend and father-figure Jeb–now her betrayer and greatest enemy–that her purpose is save the world–but can she?
