Bridge of Time by Lewis Buzbee
This book is a well-blended combination of time travel, mystery, history, strangers, race, family, and a dash of Mark Twain. It’s a smart, fun read that you’ll want to read again and again. In one vivid scene the three time travelers fall into what Sam calls a “tumble,” shooting back and forth from one time to another so rapidly it could be a light show with strobe lights. Bridge of Time is a book to savor and read more than once.
Seraphina by Rachel Hartman
Seraphina is a clever novel. It won the 2013 William C. Morris Award. The main character is smart, resourceful, brave, and empathetic. In this story, dragons and humans interchange. These aren’t the fire-breathing, blood-thirsty kind of dragons. Dragons take on a human form and live alongside humans. These dragons are smart, rational, and good deal makers. Also, this novel puts honesty high on the list of important character traits. What an interesting mix!
Tokyo Heist by Diana Renn
Violet struggles with love, friendship, a distant parent relationship, as well as creating her own manga-style graphic novel. This story will grab you and keep you reading on. During her sixteenth summer, Violet agrees to visit her father, a cool artist in Seattle. When her father’s clients, the Yamada’s, are the victims of a robbery, the stakes get high for proving who did it. Everyone’s in danger. Even Violet and her father.
