Just follow these 3 tips and you will be sure to stay safe whenever you’re online:
1. Always Show Respect
No one ever wants to feel bullied, mocked or forced to talk about stuff that makes them feel uncomfortable. So stay respectful. Be yourself. And make sure you always show respect to your online peeps. Share your opinions respectfully. And if someone says you’ve upset them, always apologize. Respect = Safety. Get this: the FBI told us that girls who swear, post inappropriate pictures or talk about mature topics, are usually the targets of online predators. So don’t be a target. Just be respectful. You’ll have much more fun AND you’ll always be safe!
2. Never Share Too Much
Your last name, your address, email address, phone number or school you attend, are all examples of things that you don’t want to share online. If anyone keeps asking for this kind of information, tell an adult. It’s just too much information. Here’s a good trick: when you’re about to post something online, make sure it’s something you would be ok with seeing on a billboard on the side of the highway, that anyone could see. If you don’t want the world to see it, don’t post it. It’s that simple.
3. Always Get Help
Whenever you feel uncomfortable with something online, tell an adult. Even if it seems small at the time, get help. Don’t wait. You’ll feel better immediately, knowing that an adult is there to keep you safe. The FBI told us that a lot of girls feel like it’s their fault that they feel uncomfortable online. That’s not true. If something makes you feel uncomfortable, it’s your inner smart self telling you that something is wrong. So always, always get help when you get that yucky uncomfortable feeling.
