Be Savvy About Your Period
October 3, 2011

First of all, let’s keep it real, girls!

Some people act like getting your period is a big secret or something to even be embarassed about. Stop right there!

Getting taller, body shape changes and menstruation — or getting your period — are all a part of growing up. These are natural changes. And you can handle them all. You will be ok!

THE TRUTH is, sometimes what we don’t know can seem scary. But the more we know about growing up, the more comfortable we can feel about what it means to each of us.

So here is some quick facts about periods:

  • Girls can start their period between ages 9 and 16. So don’t be shocked if you don’t start right away or if you start early. It’s your body’s timing… no one else’s. Every woman you see in your life, has gone through these changes, too. They laugh, have fun and live with joy… and they get their period! So they are living proof that you’ll be ok, too.
  • Your first period can last for 1-7 days. It’s ok either way. Again, what your body does is right for you. Have questions? Ask your parent, guardian or your doctor.
  • Your period is private, but it’s not embarassing. It’s natural! So it’s good to have a plan for what you’ll do when you start yours. Will you go to the nurse’s office at school? Check in with your parent if you’re at home? Ask for help from your BFF’s mom? Talk to your parent or guardian to make a plan that’s right for you and your famiy. That way you’ll know just what you’ll do when you start and you’ll feel confident to know what to do.
