Toys for An Octopus?

Why would an octopus gather shells?  At first glance the octopus seems to be having a great time — playing even.

As it turns out, the octopus uses the shells in ways that seem to have a clear purpose. Collecting and using the coconut shells is what scientists call “using tools.” We know that other animals use tools as mentioned in Snow Monkeys Like Hot Baths and Birds Can Make Tools! Researchers are excited about how an invertebrate (a creature without a backbone) like the octopus might use tools, too!
