This picture is of a baby Giant Panda,Tai Shan (tie-SHON) from August 2, 2005, when he was almost a month old. A newborn cub weighs three to five ounces and is about the size of a stick of butter. Pink, hairless, and blind, the cub is 1/900th the size of its mother. Except for a marsupial (such as the kangaroo or opossum), a giant panda baby is the smallest newborn mammal compared to its mother’s size.

The newborn Giant Panda cub at the National Zoo has only been seen on the Panda cam! The zoo people want the mother panda, Mei Xiang (may-SHONG) to have all the privacy she needs to be a good mother.

STEM Challenge: What do Giant Pandas eat in the wild? ANSWER: a Giant Panda in the wild eats a diet of 95% bamboo!

The STEM winner of this great avatar designed by creativegenius is Zebraangel!
