There are…

1) Special Programs
There are many special programs and contests on TV that are created just for this day.

2) The ringing of the bell of New Year’s Eve (Joya no Kane)
At midnight, the Buddhist temple bells are rung 108 times and people stop and listen.

3) Buckwheat noodles (Toshikoshi Soba)
Just before midnight, Japanese eat soba noodles. The shape of soba noodle is fine and long. By eating soba noodles, people wish for a long life or hope to ensure a healthy New Year.

Did you celebrate Ohmisoka?
