Make UR Prairie Dog Pup Guess Now!
June 23, 2011
0

How many prairie dog pups have emerged from their burrows this spring?

Send in your guess before it’s too late! Make your guess before next Thursday, 6/30. We’ll announce how many baby prairie dog pups there are at our Prairie Dog Study this year!

Here’s how you can make an educated guess! Or just make a guess!

Here’s why the Prairie Dog Squad is catching and marking every one of these cute prairie dog pups:

  • The Prairie Dog Squad marks every prairie dog pup with dye to count exactly how many pups have come out of their burrows this spring.

  • The Prairie Dog Squad gives each pup an ear tag. It looks like an ear ring! This lets them tell exactly who this prairie dog pup is next year when the dye is gone due to molting.

  • The prairie dog pups are marked as soon as they come above ground so that the Prairie Dog Squad can keep track of who is the family of each prairie dog pup!

  • The Prairie Dog Squad uses DNA testing to know who the father of each pup is — just like police officers and scientists do with people!

STEM Challenge: How many prairie dog pups will come above ground this year? The iTwixie girl who has the closest guess will win a cool t-shirt! Click here to see all the guesses from last year, plus the winning number!

Next week, on June 30, the Prairie Dog Squad will tell you exactly how many pups were born this year.  We will announce the winner of the STEM Challenge at the same time!

Here is some data to help you make your educated guess: This year, there are 26 adult females that have pups. Most litters (families of pups) have 4 or 5 pups.

Good luck!
