Week Two: Finish Site Set-up & First Notes

(Just click here to check out Week One of the study!)

It is Week Two into this season’s prairie dog study.

1.  The team has constructed 6-foot (2-meter) high observation towers:

2. They’ve marked the burrows and set traps with yummy prairie dog bait – oats!

3. So far, the researchers have made these notes:

• 18 prairie dogs sighted so far

• One has been caught, marked, and released

• Many birds have arrived, including: black-billed magpies, common ravens, horned larks and golden eagles

A gruesome story: on the way home one evening, the researchers saw a golden eagle swoop from the sky to steal a prairie dog from another golden. It’s a tough life on the prairie for prairie dogs!
