The Year of the Tiger!
February 18, 2010

Aren’t tigers beautiful?  They are the largest members of the cat family.  They all belong to the same species, just like all dogs belong to the same species. Tigers can live in any climate, from the heat of the woods in India to the cold snow of Siberia. Wherever they live, they seek out the shade.

Fantastic Facts about tigers:

  • All tigers are native to Asia.
  • There are 5 different kinds of living tigers: Siberian, Indochinese, South China, Bengal, and Sumatran.
  • Tigers are good swimmers and love water.
  • Tigers can climb trees, but usually do not.
  • Tigers can live 20 years in the wild.
  • Tigers are easy to raise in zoos.
  • Tigers are HUGE.  A male can weigh 420 lbs. (190 kg.) and be 9 ft. (2.7 m) long which includes a 3 ft. (0.9 m) tail!

Researchers study tigers to help protect them from endangerment. Want to see some great photos of tigers?  Check out National Geographic’s tigers online!
